The North Side Of Westby

Welcome to the WESTBY, Montana Picture Tour

Join us as we explore Westby Montana during the month of June.  Located in the extreme northeast corner of Montana, this little town has a colorful history.  In 1909, a group of Danes in the northwestern corner of North Dakota decided to start a town and applied for a post office to be called Westby. The Danish settlers came up with the towns’ name by combining the word “west,” which noted the town’s location in extreme western North Dakota, with the word “by,” Danish for town. The town remained in North Dakota until 1914, when it was moved slightly across the border so as to be next to a newly built branch line of the Soo Line Railroad and in a state that permitted the sale of alcohol.

Get An EarLY Start, its a Long Drive

It’s a 520 mile drive from Helena to Westby, Montana. We jumped in the truck after work on Friday and drove all night to see the Saturday morning sun shining on Westby, Montana during the month of June.  It was so worth the drive. The drive involved driving northeast to Fort Benton then east along Highway 2, to Culberston, Montana.  Driving slowly through the darkness we were thankful to have fantastic music from KGVA (88.1 FM) in Fort Belknap Agency, Montana playing in the background.

History of Westby Montana

Between Second and Third Avenue East, you will find a wonderful collection of Westby Montana history posted in the Visitor Information Kiosk on Main Street.  The history spans the introduction of homesteaders in 1903 up to the events in the late 1980’s. Below are photographs of just a few paragraphs that caught our attention and we hope will make you smile. Thank you Westby for a job well done!
