Bouncing around Montana you see roadside markers that bare silent witnesses to the history of the very first people in Montana. There is the Marais River Massacre (1870) southeast of Shelby, the Big Hole Battle (1877), the “Starvation Winter” (1883) near Heart Butte.  Not to mention all the smaller engagements like the battle of the Powder River (1876) southwest of Broadus and the Hayfield Fight northeast of Fort Smith (1867). You can also see roadside monuments designating the former boundaries of shrinking reservations like the second Crow Indian Agency (1875) south of Absarokee or the relocation of the Salish from the Bitterroot Valley (1891).

So Easy To Visit

The history is painful but located near the Interstate 90 roadside is a different kind of landmark, the community of Crow Agency, Montana where you can find hope for a better future. Sure. there other communities of hope in Montana such as Heart Butte, Browning, Ravalli, Fort Belknap and Ashland to name a few but Crow Agency’s location makes it the most accessible for visitors.

Bucket List Of Events Not To Miss In Crow Agency

If you are painfully shy about walking into a group of new people, you are in luck. There are two events held near Crow Agency, Montana that is a great introduction to this part of Montana.  You know how we always say June is the prettiest time of year to see Montana, well here is yet another reason to visit Montana while the hills are a lush green. The first event is a six day event called Crow Native Days that is held in late June. The second must see Crow Agency event is the largest Native encampment in the country called the Crow FairDuring this spectacular pow wow held on the third weekend in August you can see over 1,000 teepees that are stretched over the Montana landscape. Better yet, stop in town anytime of the year for fuel and a sandwich. You will also find a friendly smile and pleasant memories to last a lifetime.
