112604 We are driving on the
abandoned railroad bed that once provided a rail connection between
Livingston and Gardiner,
Montana. |
|
Trains first started running between the two towns on June 20, 1902. |
|
That's Highway 89 on the other side of
the Yellowstone river as it squeezes through "Yankee Jim Canyon."

At Corwin Springs we
return to the highway. If you have the time, it is even more fun to continue on the railroad
bed all the way into Gardiner. |

112604 Can you see the the
cliffs to the left of the sign? The red band of rock is called the
"Devil's Slide." |
|
We will jump out of
the truck here and take a close look at the La Duke Hot Spring. |

|
112604 There's
"Devil's Slide" to the left. On the right you can see the wisps of
steam from the hot spring. |

112604 Some
people stopped to investigate. |

|
You can tell when you
pass the La Duke Hot Spring in the winter, even at night. |
|
|
The hot spring heats
the road above, turning the freshly fallen snow into slush. |
