Whitehall, Montana pictures on MontanaPictures.Net (Page two of four)

82804 Across the street from the "Mint Bar" and the "Star Theater" is one of
Whitehall's oldest entertainment centers.  Can you see the fountain on the left?
Every summer for three generations, the fountain has been stocked with
hungry rainbow trout.  Kids of all ages have been throwing dead grasshoppers
in the fountain to watch the water explode as the trout lunge for the tasty morsel.

Feeding the trout is just part of the fun.  First you have to find a dozen dead grasshoppers.
(Please scroll to the right to see the view.)

You could spend a dime and buy a hand full of fish
pellets but the trout just ignore the offering.
The oldest and quickest source of grasshoppers is
off the radiator grill of a truck.

We conducted a survey over the years and it
  appears the trout prefer grasshoppers
that were removed from late model trucks.  Don't believe us?
Go to Whitehall and experiment for a couple of hours.   :o)

  Let's go!

Nothing here.

      "Skunked" again!
(Grasshopper tip #2: If the truck is up on blocks
the chances of finding a hopper is extremely low.)

What's that in the upper right corner of the grill?

Bingo!  Now we need eleven more...

Here is a shot of a live grasshopper for comparison.   (Grasshopper tip #3: If you don't have a bag or container
to store the grasshopper until you reach the water,  you can
In the old days, a kid only had a couple minutes on a Saturday can hold over a dozen hoppers in your hand by placing them
to throw in a grasshopper before they had to jump in the truck head first between your fingers.)
and return to work back on the ranch.

If you have the time and want an hour of laughter, try catching a live grasshopper.
CAUTION: Catching grasshoppers can be dangerous to an adult's ego.
Typically, the kids will capture a dozen hoppers
while you are still chasing after your first.
