According to the Natural Resources Conservation Service, cattle & deer call it, "delicious."
The Latin name is Liatris punctata  Hook.  The common name is "Dotted Blazing Star."
It flowers in the summer after most associated herbs & grasses have become brown and dead looking.
We returned to Utica, Montana just in time to see the first "Mare's tail" (cirrus) clouds coming from the Southwest.
The "Mare's Tail" clouds mean the weather is changing.  Let's head for home.
