Picture of Montana 43 rest area.
60307  The signs on Chief Joseph Pass remind us that  Chief Joseph and the Nez Perce peacefully passed through the Bitterroot Valley in 1877.
The Nez Perce traveled over 1,140 miles until they surrendered on October 5, 1877 south of Chinook, Montana.
One of the bloodiest confrontations of the "flight" occurred just down the road, "The Battle of the Big Hole."
The Nez Perce used the nearby "Gibbons Pass" to enter the Big Hole Valley in 1877.
