Main Street In Rosebud Montana

Welcome to the Rosebud Montana Picture Tour

You are now standing at the fateful site of the ill fated Custer expedition commanded by General Alfred Terry.  It was here in June 1876, the columns of General John Gibbon and and Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer under General Terry met near here at the mouth of Rosebud Creek on the steamer Far West to formulate battle plans against the Lakota, Northern Cheyenne and Arapaho Indians.

Still A Great Place To Start An Adventure

The Rosebud, Montana area is still a great place to begin exploring Montana. In the morning you can ride west ten miles to Forsyth, Montana and Highway 12.  From the two lane Highway 12 you can see 19th Century log cabins near 21st Century Wind Turbines with plenty of views and wildlife to make the small detour off Interstate 94 well worth the effort.  Don’t worry you will reconnect with the Interstate at Garrison Junction. Montana.

Range Rider Museum in Miles City

Don’t want to leave the area just yet? Then ride east to the Range Riders Museum in Miles City where you can discover all the things you thought you knew about cowboys, ranching and the American West are wrong. The museum hosts the “Bert Clark Gun Collection” featuring over 400 firearms. The firearms we liked best were the 110-year-old badly decayed rifles & handguns that were found laying near creek bottoms or in remote canyons. Each rusted firearm was fully loaded with the hammer pulled back, ready to fire. For some unknown reason the firearm was abandoned. It makes you wonder what happened to the original owner.

It Happened in Montana

While you’re visiting the Range Riders Museum you can also see the artwork of a modern day Miles City hero, Jim Masterson. Artist Jim Masterson’s cartoon series called, “It Happened in Montana,” is responsible for triggering an interest in Montana history for thousands of youngsters growing up in Montana.

When you are in Montana you are in a unique landscape that can only be appreciated by pitching a tent or trailer and spending the night. Listen the coyote, and owl as you scan the millions of blazing stars over head. Wake up to the singing Western Meadowlark and Red-winged Blackbird as the sun rises above the eastern horizon.  The Far West Campground north of Rosebud is just one of of 55 Fish Wildlife and Parks managed sites on the Yellowstone River that make it incredibly easy to experience the countryside.  Located one mile north Rosebud, Montana on Highway 446 the site is the perfect location to gradually acclimate yourself to Montana if you are a new visitor. There are few bugs, lots of space and the grounds are beautifully maintained. For natives, it’s a great starting point to explore the parts of Montana that are never featured in the travel brochures.
