You are now ready to tackle the last of
the "Snowboard alphabet:" The letter
"S" |
Jump on the chairlift and let's carve
some |
"S" turns. Watch the boarder get
off the |
chair with one foot "buckled" in and the |
other foot free. |

The last & best snowboard "turn" |
is the |
Letter "S" turn |
After a day or two of “J” turns, |
you begin to feel the urge to link |
the turns together. Even though the |
carve lasts a mere
second or two |
the UP-Hill
edge of our board is always in |
contact with the
snow except for the |
split-second of
switching from the |
“Army Man”
position to the “Ballerina”
position. |

Check List on
your first days of snowboarding |
Bring extra
equipment – you will be laying in the snow most of |
the day.
An extra pair of long underwear, mittens and hat |
will really come in
handy. |
Leave your ego at
home. You will fall over one hundred times |
in your first three
days of snowboarding - Enjoy it. |
Bring gallons of water and a lunch.
One of the perks of |
boarding is you can carry your lunch up
to a nice vantage point |
and enjoy the view while eating your
sandwich.
While learning to
board avoid the rope tow. |
You will be wearing
the worlds’ most comfortable snow boots |
so utilize them and
walk up the hill the first |
half dozen trips up. |
The rope tow forces you to
put all your
weight on your |

back leg
which is the exact opposite of what you |
(.WMV File size 849KB) |
are trying to master on the slopes. |
(Remember, if you want to fall
put your weight on your up-hill leg.
See example
here.) |
If you are
right-handed, slide down the hill left foot first |
If you are
left-handed you are a
“goofy foot." |
You’ll slide down
the hill right foot first. |
To fight fatigue,
rest your left leg |
and board on your
right boot while riding the chairlift. |
Always observe the rules of
"Ski Hill Etiquette." |
Always wear a helmet. No matter
how skilled you are, |
there is a
very high
probability that you |
will fall on you
back. |
(Click
for "Kissing the wall with your face.") |
Once your back hits
the ground the back of your head |
(.WMV File size 1,160KB) |
will naturally "slap"
the ground. |
Not a problem, IF
you have a helmet on. |
Now let's ride down the hill in control.
