101407 The Fort Shaw
historical marker on
the west side of town is usually ignored by motorists in a hurry.
|
|
If
people do stop
they rarely drive out to the fort - they are missing out.
|
|
There are many Montana military forts that led a peaceful existence.
Not in the case of Fort Shaw. |
|
During
its twenty-four year history
(1868-1891)
Fort Shaw was the starting point of many famous and infamous battles in
Montana. |
| |
|
Fort Shaw is named after Colonel Robert Gould Shaw. The story of
Colonel Shaw and the
54th
Massachusetts |
|
was dramatized in the 1989 movie, “Glory,” starring Morgan
Freeman & Matthew Broderick. |
| |
|
 |
|
The two mile drive from the
Fort Shaw historical marker
to the fort gets interesting immediately. |
| |
There are some
great old time buildings in
this area. |
