Fort Shaw, Montana town pictures on MontanaPictures.net (Page one of one)

Picture of the Fort Shaw Montana Historical Marker on highway 200.
101407 The Fort Shaw historical marker on the west side of town is usually ignored by motorists in a hurry.
If people do stop they rarely drive out to the fort - they are missing out.
There are many Montana military forts that led a peaceful existence.  Not in the case of Fort Shaw.
During its twenty-four year history (1868-1891) Fort Shaw was the starting point of many famous and infamous battles in Montana.

Fort Shaw is named after Colonel Robert Gould Shaw.  The story of Colonel Shaw and the 54th Massachusetts
was dramatized in the 1989 movie, “Glory,” starring Morgan Freeman & Matthew Broderick.

The two mile drive from the Fort Shaw historical marker to the fort gets interesting immediately.
There are some great old time buildings in this area.
While you walk around notice how the residential streets are laid out in concentric squares.

the 13th Infantry from Fort Shaw attacked a peaceful Piegan Indian Village on the Marias River.

The “Battle on the Marias” is also known as the “Baker Massacre.” ***

On March 17, 1876, General George Crook and the “Montana Column” consisting of the 7th Infantry
and 2nd United States Calvary left Fort Shaw to meet up with the “Dakota Column” under
expedition commander, General Alfred A. Terry.
(The tour includes 8 pictures   The two combined “columns” rode into history at the "Battle of the Little Big Horn." ***
