60406 Drive east of Glacier Park on Highway 2 and you will pass this Montana Highway Historical Marker.   (Note: This is a dirt side road just off the paved Highway 2.)

60506 Because of its location, very few people stop to read this important piece of Montana history.
Glacier Park is only minutes away.  West bound travelers with kids weary from a long drive zoom past the sign.
East bound travelers on the twelfth day of their two-week vacation are trying to return to the Midwest as quickly as possible.
Let's walk out to the monument...

60606 Imagine standing here on July 22, 1806.  You're hungry, you are wet from continuous rain and you're trespassing on Blackfoot land.
See where the mountains abruptly end to the left of the monument?   That's the entrance to Marias Pass and Essex, Montana.
